Port Lincoln in South Australia is famous as one of Australia’s premier commercial fishing ports. The region is known as the fresh seafood capital of Australia. A large tuna fishing fleet has operated out of Port Lincoln for generations and now tuna farming has become big business. Recreational fishermen flock to Port Lincoln to try their luck from the local jetties and piers as well as from the rocks, beaches and from charter fishing boats of all descriptions. Divers also come to Port Lincoln to participate in caged dives to see the Great White Sharks from close range. The local fishing industry is also strong for Oysters and Scollops, southern rock lobsters, Abalone and Prawns.

Port Lincoln is located at the southern end of the Ayer Peninsula south from Whyalla, which is a rich agricultural region and also popular with holiday makers from Adelaide. There are 60000 hectares of National parks in the vicinity which means there are lots of local wildlife, places of interest to visit and many things to do in Port Lincoln. There have also been over 600 bird species known to live in the region so birdwatchers can have a field day.

Port Lincoln was discovered by Matthew Flinders in 1802 in his ship Investigator. During his visit he lost eight of his crew. Colonel Light considered Port Lincloln as the site for the capital of South Australia, however, in the end decided on Adelaide due to its closer location to fresh water supplies. Today, Port Lincoln has a population of 12000 and experiences a Mediterranean style climate with mild winters and very pleasant spring and autumn conditions. Rainfall mostly occurs during the winter months leaving the summers hot and dry and ideal for beach going and watersports.

The commercial center is busy with lots of excellent shopping and the restaurant and café industry here is famous for serving the local fresh seafood.
